“During my Medill Teaching Newspaper internship, I covered a trial in Alabama that was straight out of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.’ An illiterate Black man was falsely accused of raping a white women. An all white jury convicted him after three hours of deliberation, amidst public protests by the KKK and by anti-racist groups. It was a national story. Covering stories like that served me well in both my journalism career and later as a public relations executive. Medill taught me how to think and act under pressure in countless situations, and to simplify complex subjects with concision and illumination.”
