William Weinbaum (BSJ82, MSJ83)

“I’m grateful for Medill’s emphasis on ethics, accuracy, fairness and thoroughness. We learned early that journalism isn’t for wimps and it was hammered home with humbling and beneficial ‘tough love’ including scalding red ink from profs’ pens on our typewritten papers. In our first meeting, Medill freshman advisor Ben Baldwin suggested that I get a part-time newspaper job for experienceI reported and wrote sports for the Skokie News, made $30 a week and learned plenty. And Jack Williams taught us to always give interviewees the chance to add what they want at the end, because we surely didn’t cover everything and it might yield more/the most memorable material. To go with countless valuable lessons, Medill’s given me lifelong contacts, mentors and friends.”
