James Gutman (MSJ69)

“My favorite memory is one of the earliest ones I had — in the summer program for starting MSJ students. It was in 1968 and Prof. Neil McNeil, who directed that semester, had each of the students cover a delegation at the Democratic National Convention, which was in Chicago that summer, for both Medill and small-newspaper clients. I had the good fortune to be assigned the California delegation, which was diverse and accessible. But the most indelible memory was that while doing this, I saw firsthand and almost became a victim of the “police riot” vs. demonstrators protesting in the Chicago streets against the Vietnam war. The whole episode left me convinced I had chosen the right profession.”

“Medill taught me the value of empathy, to approach a problem through analysis but to solution using synthesis, humility to understand that some problems are bigger than me and the strength and conviction to try and make a difference.
It’s a special experience and has shaped my perspective of the world. I’m extremely grateful and thankful for my time there.”

“When I entered Medill, I was a person who could code. When I came out of the program, I had a unique blend of technical, design, content and customer research skills that I could mix and match and apply to a variety of different roles. Every single job that I have had since leaving Medill, I have relied on the fundamental skills that I learned during the program.”

“Medill changed my life. The education was more than materials and case studies; it opened my eyes to what I was good at and set me up for success from that point on. I lead a marketing services agency and use the learnings from Medill every day. I’m proud to say I am an adjunct lecturer at Medill, teaching Digital Analytics. My hope is that I can inspire students like I was inspired years ago.”

“I began my career as a TV reporter before moving on to eight years as a U.S. Congressman and now manage public policy for a law firm. Each step along the way Medill was crucial to my success. I learned one fundamental critical skill in then-spartan Fisk Hall: how to listen. Medill’s professors drilled it into me. Don’t make assumptions. Research carefully. Talk to all sides. Get the facts right. Only then can the storytelling begin. You know the old line. God gave you two ears and one mouth. In a shoot-from-the-hip era, listening is the rarest commodity of all. Thanks, Medill.”

“Medill IMC gave me the data skills and experience that would become the standard for marketing just a few short years later. I’ve been using that analytical foundation and approach ever since in my career with companies like Google, Facebook, Cisco and now in venture capital. I guess those long nights in the basement computer lab of Fisk Hall paid off.”

“As a graduate student, I had the opportunity to complete my summer immersion quarter at Mondelez International. As an intern, my teammates and I conducted a social media landscape analysis that was used to drive the development of MDLZ’s social media strategy. Last year, I joined the company to lead its corporate social media strategy and manage its corporate channels. When I completed my internship, I knew I would return to the company some day. Had it not been for the summer immersion quarter, I don’t think I would have the breadth of knowledge and confidence to lead social media for a global corporation.”
