“My favorite memory is one of the earliest ones I had — in the summer program for starting MSJ students. It was in 1968 and Prof. Neil McNeil, who directed that semester, had each of the students cover a delegation at the Democratic National Convention, which was in Chicago that summer, for both Medill and small-newspaper clients. I had the good fortune to be assigned the California delegation, which was diverse and accessible. But the most indelible memory was that while doing this, I saw firsthand and almost became a victim of the “police riot” vs. demonstrators protesting in the Chicago streets against the Vietnam war. The whole episode left me convinced I had chosen the right profession.”
